Should McCain be considered AWOL from the Senate?

Republican presidential nominee-to-be John McCain (R-AZ) has missed more votes than any other senator since the current Congress. According to the Washington Post, McCain has missed 374 out of 605 possible votes.

McCain has missed more votes than Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD), who had a brain hemorrhage and collapsed; or Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA), who was diagnosed with a brain tumor and began chemotherapy. McCain has missed more votes than the 57 best-attending senators combined (they missed 371 among them).
