On 05 Sep 1990, seven HIV/AIDS activists enveloped Sen. Jesse Helms' (R-NC) house in a giant condom to protest his vicious gay-baiting and his abuse of his position to block funding for prevention and treatment. The action strike was covered by numerous media outlets and called national attention to Helms' genocidal conduct.

Besides Staley, other participants included Mark Allen, Jason Childers, Garance Franke-Ruta, Derek Link, James Serafini, and Sean Strub, along with videographer Robert Hilferty. David Geffen provided funding.
